PRIMARY ‘ACTION” OF MONARCH RED CARPET CAMPAIGN –PLANT MILKWEED ALONG Major MIGRATION PATHS

  • The first step is to engage business and industry and public agencies, starting with travel and tourism, to include milkweed and other native plants in their landscape designs.  This is a win-win approach as the facilities can use their butterfly garden as a marketing tool and monarch butterflies and other pollinators get their food and habitat.
  • During the pilot year of 2016, over forty companies and public agencies planted milkweed in their existing landscape or created whole new pollinator gardens at their facilities, along their river walks, and hiking/biking trails.
  • In addition to hotels, B&Bs, farmstays, campgrounds, etc. the Susquehanna Greenways Partnership is partnering with MRC to re-plant milkweed and other native plants along the hiking, biking and boating trails on the banks of the Susquehanna River that runs from New York to the Chesapeake Bay.
  • The travel and tourism companies and public agencies in the pilot region along US Route 11 and the Susquehanna River have openly and enthusiastically begun to “Roll out the Monarch Red Carpet” by integrating milkweed into their existing landscape or establishing new pollinator gardens.

Engage a large spectrum of society to Plant milkweed gardens!

  • Bloomsburg Carpet has enthusiastically agreed to manufacture high quality, indoor welcome mats.

  • Sale of these mats will support the effort to “Roll Out the Monarch Red Carpet” by planting milkweed along the Monarch Butterfly major migration paths.
